An incomplete list of tools to take to ‘The Jungle’ for building shelters

I went to The Jungle last week to help build shelters – I wanted to write something about the experience, but at the same I didn’t. This is the compromise I came up with.

An incomplete list of tools and materials to take to ‘The Jungle’ for building shelters:

  • Makita 18v Impact driver
  • 2 of 4Ah batteries (cheap Axminster copies last longer than expensive Makita)
  • Makita charger (remember to charge batteries overnight in hostel – no reliable power on site)
  • Box of PZ2 driver bits
  • Box of Torx 25 driver bits (for French screws)
  • Hammer
  • Large crowbar
  • Sharp hand saw
  • Stanley knife and spare blades stored in handle
  • Carpenters pencils
  • 500 of 25mm clout nails (wide head to prevent tarps pulling through) for each day you will be there
  • 200 of good quality 5x80mm screws for each day you will be there
  • Tool belt
  • Small spirit level
  • Small lockable tool box or backpack to keep tools with you
  • Warm gloves
  • Steel toe-cap rigger boots
  • Waterproof socks
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Warm clothes – long johns for under jeans and a padded shirt
  • LED head-torch
  • Large bar of dark and nutty chocolate
